Choose a card waiting in the crossfire when you deploy this, either player's, not an ability. When this resolves, the card's owner may pay {2}, with any steam; then their card stays and resolves as usual. The card goes back to its owner's hand: it never resolves, so it never comes on board and its effect never happens, and the steam paid for it stays spent. It isn't scrapped. A token stops existing. If the card has left the crossfire by then, nothing happens (604.7).
